Day 8 - More fact finding and a trip to the laundrette

Thursday and it's exactly one week since I left Dublin.  At this point I'm running low on clothes.  Our hotel offers a laundry service but we thought it would be better to give one of the many smaller laundries our support.

The inside didn't inspire much confidence but the price was good so we pushed ahead and left our bags of clothes off, agreeing to pay a bit extra for next day service.

On collection we were delighted at the fine job the lady did and at a price of EUR0.80 who would complain anyway!

After 2 days of meetings with various stakeholders we are now beginning to fit the pieces of the puzzle together (or at least getting to a point where we can ask relevant questions). We are back in Solo Technopark for the day for a tour with Bp Sutrisno and several meetings with staff, students, alumnis and an employer who hires STP graduates.

We met with Ms Ayu (manager) and Bp Endi Suhardi (supervisor) with TRC  - a Japanese company that manufactures electronic components. They were in Technopark to conduct tests and interviews for hiring graduates. They visit twice a year and hire 5 to 10 each time. They like STP graduates as they are trained in CNC machines (a high end automated machine). They pay 3.9 million Rupiahs a month (EUR245) and include lunch and bus to work. With overtime a graduate can earn 5m Rupiahs (EUR315). Monthly rent in Jakarta where TRC are based is around 250k (EUR16).

An underwater welding student getting rigged for practice. The tubes form a plait containing his oxygen, gas for the welding and a signal cable to communicate back to dry land.

The welding training room. While all of the workshops were hot, the heat in this room is indescribable  - doesn't seem to bother the locals but I wouldn't last long here.

Three alumnis  - Andisahrul, Alexandro and Ahkmad who were back to do tests and interviews as they were looking for new roles. All 3 had completed the manufacturing mechanics course at Technopark.
They said they had decided to study here when STP gave a presentation at their vocational high school and offered free places. They gave some good feedback on their experience studying at STP.

We met with a group of current students - from left Puji Astuti (17 Mechanical Design), Afifah Puji le Stari (18 Mechanical Design), Yudi Pramano (18 Textile Machine mechanics), Ibnu Efiendi (18 Mechanical Automation), Ratk Adake (19 Textile Machine mechanics), Betha Sanjaya (19 Mechanical Automation).

Late on Thurs evening we had a check in with Bp Sumadi, head of Solo Technopark, we shared our initial findings with him and discussed what we felt would be a realistic scope of work.
